Why apartments need their own approach
A house move mostly comes down to the driveway and the front door. An apartment move adds a hallway, sometimes a stairwell or an elevator, and almost always a building manager with rules of their own. Treating the two the same way is how apartment moves end up running long.
We start every apartment estimate by asking about the building specifically, not just the unit, because the building is usually what decides how the day unfolds.
Reading the building first
Before move day, we ask about elevator reservations, required certificates of insurance, and whether the building has a specific loading dock or zone. Many of the newer complexes along Sonoma Boulevard and near the ferry terminal have all three, and missing one can mean the truck gets turned away.
Older walk-up buildings closer to the waterfront skip most of that paperwork but bring narrow stairwells and tight landings instead, which changes how furniture has to travel rather than whether it can move at all.
Staging the load
We stage boxes near the elevator or stairwell so the reserved window is used efficiently rather than spent waiting for the next load to be carried down the hall. One mover typically stays at each end of the elevator run so the cab never sits open and empty.
For walk-up units, we plan the order items come down in, heaviest and most awkward pieces first while the crew is fresh.
Parking and loading zones
Apartment complexes along the waterfront and near downtown often have limited visitor parking and specific rules about where a moving truck can sit. We confirm this ahead of time with the leasing office so the crew is not circling the block on move day.
Where street parking is the only option, we ask you to reserve a spot with cones or a neighbor's help if the building allows it, since a truck parked two blocks away turns every trip into a longer carry.
Small units, real logistics
A studio or one-bedroom apartment might look like a quick job, but stairs, a long hallway, or a strict elevator window can make it take longer than a house with a driveway. We size the crew and the time estimate around the building, not just the square footage.
Renters moving between apartments in the same complex still benefit from a planned approach, since even a short move within the same building has its own elevator rules to work around.
